Summer Blog Entry June 21-July 11

06/21/2013 1:43 PM - Adam Turner

This year’s ECHL schedule starts a week later and ends two weeks later than last year. The extra week creates one extra weekend of action and cuts down on the amount of four games in five night sets that the Grizzlies and the rest of the league played last year.

Especially in February and March in 2012-2013; when Utah played 15 games each month. This upcoming season, they are scheduled for only 11 games in February and 12 in March. Going down the stretch, fatigue and injuries seem to become much more of a factor due to the usual frequency of games late. By adding the extra week, it gives teams an extra Friday, Saturday at the box office, while also taking a bit of a grind off of the athletes.

Utah plays three-games-in-three-nights this year just three times, after playing “3-in-3” seven times in 2012-2013.

The Grizzlies play four games in five nights only three times in 2013-2014 after four times in 2012-2013; three of which came between February 22 and March 17.

Utah’s first trip to the Eastern Conference since joining the ECHL in 2005, ironically will be to Orlando, whom Utah competed against from 1995-2001 in the IHL. The Grizzlies last played in Orlando March 8 and 9 of 2001 and swept the Solar Bears in the 1996 Turner Cup Finals.
Due to ECHL League Meetings next week in Las Vegas and July 4th the following week, the blog will take two weeks off and return July 12.

Also, if you missed it, here is part 3 of our 4 part June YouTube Series. Grizzlies Head Coach Kevin Colley talks about recruiting, being ahead of schedule this offseason, a new addition to the hockey staff and more in Part 3 of our 4 Part June YouTube Series.

Summer Blog Entry: June 14

06/14/2013 3:18 PM - Adam Turner

The triple-overtime game Wednesday night in game one of the Stanley Cup Final, was similar to a triple-overtime game the Grizzlies played in the 2008 playoffs against Fresno.

Utah also won 4-3 in 3 overtimes on April 14-15, 2008. They also trailed 3-1 in the third period, before also quickly tying the game up with two goals in 48 seconds.

Boston hit at least one post past regulation trying to win as did Fresno, before ultimately falling around midnight in triple overtime. Tyler Haskins actually had a chance to win the game for Utah 3:02 into overtime on a penalty shot, but was denied and the game continued for 42 more minutes and 21 seconds before Haskins picked up a turnover and fed Justin Bourne for the game-winning score.

Here are the highlights from the triple overtime win on the old 860 AM The Wolf, The True Oldies Channel!

Contracts for the 2013-2014 season can start to be submitted to the ECHL for approval on Sunday morning and Grizzlies Director of Hockey    Operations Ian Greenwald will be in the office early to begin sending contracts to the league office.

Also, if you missed part two of our four part YouTube series this week, here is the recruiting video that the Grizzlies have produced to give potential recruits a visual introduction to the Grizzlies, Maverik Center and Utah.

Summer Blog Entry: June 7

06/07/2013 2:46 PM - Adam Turner

The Grizzlies have been able to get an edge on 2013-2014 by having their staff and plan in place early.

The only plus about the early exit from the playoffs was that by Friday, April 12; Kevin Colley had his offseason plan in place as well as a planned outline for the 2013-2014 season. On that day, Colley added the General Manager’s title, while Ian Greenwald was promoted to Director of Hockey Operations/Video coordinator. Those two have been busy on the recruiting trail the last two months doing research on potential players. They have talked to a lot of agents, college coaches and players about the Utah Grizzlies. As we talked about in part one of our four part YouTube series last week, character is the most valued characteristic every season when putting a team together and it takes a lot of background work and fact checking to find the players you want. Coming up Tuesday, we will highlight our 2013-2014 Recruiting Video that is being emailed to potential prospects.

Looking around the ECHL there is definitely some teams currently in transition or maybe headed that way.  Las Vegas will have a new coach in former captain from this past season Mike Madill. Bakersfield has yet to hire a Head Coach after Matt O’Dette announced the final day of the regular season that he would not be retained. Matt Thomas in Stockton is a finalist for the Head Coaching job at the University of Alaska-Anchorage.  Utah’s stability, with Kevin Colley entering his sixth season as Head Coach here, is definitely a plus moving forward in the recruiting season.

The first draft of the ECHL schedule had to be returned to the league by teams Wednesday with their feedback and suggestions. Draft number two should be viewed by teams in the next few weeks, which usually is followed by the final draft shortly after that.
