Final Summer Blog Entry: August 31

Again a special thanks to Trevor Lewis for sharing the Stanley Cup with the hockey community on Thursday here at the arena.

Trevor went out of his way to bring the cup to Maverik Center and was under no obligation to have a public appearance during his 24 hours with the cup. It was very important for him to give something back to his hometown hockey community and as a Grizzlies organization we could not be more appreciative to have the chance to be involved. The attendance at the event of 6,500 people was an overwhelming turnout.

The Grizzlies have completed a trade with South Carolina, sending Ryan Turek to the Stingrays in exchange for future considerations. The trade will ultimately add depth forward wise for Utah, as they are already very deep on the backend going into training camp. The Stingrays in turn were looking to add an experienced defenseman.

New faces for Utah next year going into training camp, will include the team’s first-ever set of identical twins. One is a forward and one is a defenseman.

With college football opening this weekend, Grizzlies fans that double as University of Utah fans will not see any head-to-head conflicts this year between their home games, assuming October 27 against California is an afternoon game at Rice-Eccles Stadium.

If you want an inside story on my summer, my friend Doug Plagens, the voice of the AHL’s Lake Erie Monsters in Cleveland; recently documented our annual baseball trip to the Midwest. You can watch that here.

A referee the Grizzlies became familiar with in the Western Conference the last few years has been hired by the NHL, with T.J. Luxmore getting the call. Couldn’t tell you what the guy looks like or what his number was. For a referee, that’s probably the biggest compliment possible. I just remember seeing his name on the game sheets though as much as anyone on Utah’s schedule. Good thing, I have a good photo archive and with the help of the ECHL Official Guide and Record Book, was able to quickly locate him for the front photo of this blog.

Upcoming player announcements will include among other things: a popular former player returning to the Grizzlies that Kevin Colley is excited about. In addition, the team will also welcome a former opponent the last few years. A player you don’t like playing against, but like on your team.

As the summer continues, I took some time yesterday to break down each roster so far in the Western Conference and take some notes. Not to be vanilla, but every team honestly looks pretty solid as is just about always the case in the sport of hockey. With the overtime and shootouts, you usually end up with just about everyone close to .500 or better. Always seems that at the NHL, AHL and ECHL levels, it’s about who gets hot at the end and most teams are in the hunt for the playoffs too when you factor in overtime and shootout losses.

Make sure to join us Thursday as Trevor Lewis celebrates the Stanley Cup during his 24 hours with the trophy here at Maverik Center.

The Grizzlies and a local radio group will soon announce a broadcast agreement for the upcoming season and beyond. Details will follow, but if you have been following local radio since we signed off at the end of the playoffs last year, you are aware that just about everything frequency and talent wise has changed on sports radio here in Utah and with that comes an evolution of our broadcast situation as well. Can’t wait to tell you about it!

Former Utah Assistant Coach Dean Chynoweth (1998-2000) was recently named Head Coach of the AHL’s Lake Erie Monsters. He joins former Grizzlies forward David Oliver who is the General Manager and Assistant Coach for the Monsters, who are the AHL affiliate for the Colorado Avalanche. He played here from 2002-2004. Chynoweth also played for the Salt Lake Golden Eagles during the 1993-1994 season.

Grizzlies beat writer Steve Luhm, from the Salt Lake Tribune, is looking forward to his second season on the Utah beat after doing a phenomenal job covering the team last season. He is planning an offseason update article on the team for late August, early September.

With the Olympics going on, the Grizzlies have a front office tie in London working 14-16 hours a day during the games. The team’s Vice President of Business Operations/CFO Jill Roberts is working with the team’s parent company the Elmore Sports Group across the pond and has attended Men’s Gymnastics, Synchronized Diving and also saw Michael Phelps win a gold medal on Thursday night in the 200 Meter individual medley as he edged fellow American Ryan Lochte.

Make sure to catch Grizzbee during your offseason weekends, if you’re going to be in any areas he is. Here is his schedule. He will be out a lot in the next week and a half.

Also, if you haven’t seen this promo for opening night, make sure to check it out.
