West Valley City, Utah – Utah Grizzlies Head Coach and Director of Hockey Operations Kevin Colley announced today that veteran right wing Tim Verbeek has signed a contract with the team for the 2008-2009 season. Verbeek played 11 games with Utah in the AHL during the 2003-2004 season tallying one goal, one assist and 32 penalty minutes.

The Grizzlies are proud to be the ECHL affiliate of the NHL’s New York Islanders and their AHL affiliate in Bridgeport.

“The E-Center is an amazing NHL quality building and the fans have always been very supportive of the Grizzlies,” said Verbeek.  “I played against Kevin Colley in juniors and know what kind of person he is.”

Verbeek has spent the last two years with the ECHL’s Stockton Thunder. The 28-year-old scored two goals against the Grizzlies April 4, 2008 in a 6-5 Stockton win as the Thunder battled for the final playoff spot in the National Conference. Overall, he is a veteran of 400 professional games and 44 playoffs contests.

The Ontario native scored a shorthanded goal in his Grizzlies debut October 10, 2003 at the E-Center versus San Antonio.

“Tim plays with heart and has a great passion for the game,” said Colley. “He comes from a great hockey family and will add a nice veteran presence to our dressing room." Verbeek’s brother Pat played in the NHL for 20 seasons from 1982-2002.

The Grizzlies open the 2008-2009 season Saturday, October 18 at Idaho. The home opening weekend for Utah is Friday and Saturday, October 24 and 25 versus Alaska at the E-Center. NHL hockey returns to the E-Center for the first time in a decade October 5 when the San Jose Sharks meet the Los Angeles Kings at 7:05 p.m.
