Grizzlies on Road This Week in Idaho
West Valley City, Utah – The 2-0 Utah Grizzlies hit the road this weekend as they take on the Idaho Steelheads for games on Friday and Saturday at CenturyLink Arena in Boise.
Utah won 4-2 in the season opener last Friday night against Rapid City as head coach Tim Branham became the winningest head coach in Utah Grizzlies history. Coming into the season, coach Branham was tied with Butch Goring with 178 wins each behind the bench in Utah.
On Saturday against Rapid City, the Grizzlies got 2 goals from Matt Berry and 1 goal and 1 assist from Josh Winquist and Caleb Herbert in a 6-2 win. Defenseman Kevin Davis was named number 1 star of the night after scoring 1 goal and 2 assists. 12 different Grizzlies skaters registered a point or more in the game. 5 different Grizzlies had a multiple point game.
Herbert had an outstanding first week in a Grizzlies uniform, scoring 2 goals and 1 assist on his 27th birthday on Friday. He added that up with a 2 point night on Saturday. For the week, Herbert had 3 goals and 2 assists. All 3 Herbert goals came on the power play.
Josh Winquist gave the Grizzlies an early 1-0 lead in both games last weekend. Winquist ended the week with 2 goals and 2 assists. Last year, Winquist had 53 points in 55 games for the Orlando Solar Bears.
Goaltender Joe Cannata had a unique weekend on the stat sheet. Cannata was 26 of 28 in each of the 2 games against Rapid City. He had a .929 save % for the week, which is near the .931 save% that he had for the Colorado Eagles in the 2017-18 season, which ended with Colorado winning the Kelly Cup.
This weekend the Grizzlies will be in Boise, Idaho for the first 2 games of the season series. Both teams met twice in the preseason, with each winning on the other teams home ice. The division rivals will meet 15 times during the regular season. Cole Ully returns to Idaho, where he scored 20 goals in 45 games for the Steelheads. Ully had 2 assists last week against Rapid City.
12,719 fans showed up at Maverik Center for opening weekend. Next home weekend for the Grizzlies is October 26th and 27th against the Idaho Steelheads. October 26th will be Octoberfest with beer specials. It’s also an AFCU Friday where tickets start at $8 for America First Credit Union members paying with their AFCU Debit/Credit Card. October 27th is Epilepsy Awareness Night with the Epilepsy Foundation of Utah. The team will be wearing specialty jersey’s that will be auctioned off after the game.
