West Valley City, Utah – The Utah Grizzlies defeated the Tulsa Oilers 5-2 Friday night at Maverik Center before 6,843 fans.
Utah scored four-straight goals to erase a 1-0 first period deficit and closed the contest with five of the final six goals. Rookie Brendan Harms led the way with one goal and two assists. Goaltender Sean Maguire stopped 22 of 24 in the win to improve to 2-1-1-0 with Utah and 10-6-1-0 on the year overall.
“Kudos to the boys, they played with a lot of energy and passion,” said Head Coach/General Manager Tim Branham. “The difference all year is when we score goals, we win. We have lost a lot of 2-1 games.”
The Grizzlies scored two power-play goals in 5:56 3:06 after falling behind 1-0 4:49 into the game as they took a 2-1 lead. Jon Puskar slipped in his 11th of the year on Utah’s first shot to tie the game from Chris Leibinger (two assists) and Harms before Austin Ortega roofed a loose puck in front from Ryan Misiak and Taylor Richart (two assists).
Utah made it 3-1 in the second period as Brad Navin (3) took a pass in front from Travis Howe as he and Harms worked behind the Tulsa net.
“Our power-play was hot today and a difference was depth scoring,” said Branham. “When Brad Navin and Brendan Harms score, that's the depth scoring we need.”
Ryan Walters and Mitch Hults found Cliff Watson, again, in front to make it 4-1 4:35 into the third.
After a Tulsa goal, Utah capped the scoring with a Harms power-play goal as he went top shelf on a rebound as Leibinger and Richart added two more assists.
Utah outshot Tulsa 34-21 and went 3-for-6 on the power-play as they killed their only two shorthanded situations late in the second period to hold the 3-1 lead.
