Rapid City Beats Utah 4-3 In Overtime On Controversial Ending

01/19/2018 10:00 PM -

Rapid City, South Dakota - The Rapid City Rush defeated the Utah Grizzlies 4-3 in overtime Friday night at Rushmore Plaza Civic Center.

The Rush scored 3:15 into overtime on a breakaway by Peter Sivak as the Grizzlies and Head Coach Tim Branham could not believe that Rapid City wasn’t called for Too Many Men On The Ice as they had five skaters out for the game-winning goal in the three-on-three situation.

The Grizzlies outshot the Rush 49-22 in the contest as they also had a season-high 25 shots in the third period. Rapid City goaltender Adam Vay made 46 saves including hauling in a puck ticketed to the back of the net on a second chance by Erik Higby just before in overtime.

Utah captain Ryan Walters tipped home his 15th goal of the season to give Utah a 3-2 lead in the third period as he won a face-off after an icing and Mitch Jones blasted it in. Jack Walter tipped in a puck with 11:11 remaining as Utah was unable to clear the puck.

The Grizzlies fell behind 1-0 6:15 into the first period on a three-on-two before Utah got a pair of power-play goals to take a 2-1 lead. Kyle Thomas (9) scored crashing the net from Austin Ortega and Ryan Walters to tie the contest 8:24 into the first period.

Austin Ortega (4) tipped home a Taylor Richart blast to make it 2-1Utah 5:50 later at 14:14.

Arizona Coyotes prospect Sean Maguire stopped 18 of 22 in his Utah debut as the Grizzlies collect a standings point.
