West Valley City, Utah - The Utah Grizzlies erased a 4-1 third period to defeat the Idaho Steelheads 5-4 in a shootout Saturday night at Maverik Center.
“That was a big one,” said Head Coach/General Manager Tim Branham. “That was emotional for us for sure. We know we had a tough opponent here and we put ourselves in a deep hole going into the third period. The boys battled hard and found a way to win. They deserve it. They have worked hard and we are now getting the results.
With the win, Utah takes both games from Idaho on the weekend and improves to 6-2-0-1 in their last nine games.
The Grizzlies erased the three-goal hole with three goals in 5:59 in the first 9:29 of the frame to make it 4-4 as Ryan Walters (11) tipped a puck in, Jon Puskar (4) scored on the power-play and Charley Graaskamp (3, 4) scored his second of the game after Chris Leibinger carried a puck in and the Utah rookie scored his second of the game.
“Our guys stayed calm and composed,” said Branham. “We have come back so many times this year and we knew we would do it again.”
Utah goaltender Kevin Carr relieved Angus Redmond, with Utah down 4-1 in the second period, and stopped 18-straight shots and then two of three in the shootout before Utah captain Ryan Walters ended the game in the sudden-death round three. Graaskamp gave Utah a 1-0 lead in round one of the shootout.
“I was fortunate to be in the right place at the right time,” said Graaskamp on the two goals. “A couple of great players made some great plays and I happened to benefit from it.
Idaho took a 2-0 lead with two goals in the first 6:49 before Graaskamp redirected home a Taylor Richart shot to get Utah on the board with Mitch Jones also picking up an assist.
The Steelheads scored two power-play goals in the second period to build a 4-1 lead.
