West Valley City, Utah – The Colorado Eagles defeated the Utah Grizzlies 2-1 Saturday night at Maverik Center.
Utah goes into the Holiday Break at 4-2-0-1 in their last seven contests.
“The boys did a good job in the third period of battling. We didn't do a good job in the first period,” said Head Coach/General Manager Tim Branham. “No excuses. We looked tired and they didn't. We got a little better as the game went on. At the end of the day they got two power play goals, we got one. It's a tight game and we have to find a way to win those tight games rather than lose them.”
Utah and Colorado wrapped up nine games in the first 30 games of the year against each other with eight of nine games decided by a goal and five going past regulation.
“We have been in a lot of one-goal games this year and on the wrong end of them,” said Branham. “Come the second half, we will get rested, get a good string together and play good hockey.”
Colorado scored first period and second period power-play goals before Utah answered with 6:54 left in regulation on a Kyle Thomas (6) power-play goal from Greger Hanson and Michael Pelech with 6:53 left in regulation.
“The turning point of the game was missing on the shorthanded breakaway and then they went down and scored,” said Branham after Greger Hanson was denied by Colorado goaltender Lukas Hafner before the Eagles first goal of the contest 7:08 into the first period.
Despite outshooting Colorado 14-4 in the period, the Grizzlies were unable to get the equalizer as they had to kill a late penalty.
Utah goaltender Kevin Carr again kept the Grizzlies in the contest as he stopped 34 of 36 shots in the contest.
“Kevin made some big saves,” said Branham. “He's been playing a lot of hockey, a lot of travel. He made some big saves down the stretch.”
