West Valley City, Utah – The Idaho Steelheads added a late empty-net goal to defeat the Utah Grizzlies 5-2 Wednesday night at Maverik Center.
“Definitely disappointed, we had a goal waved off, hit 2 crossbars, hit a post. It's just evident of our luck,” said Head Coach/General Manager Tim Branham. “Once again, I thought we played a pretty good game but it's not good enough. We are an organization that judges itself on wins and losses and we need to play better.”
Utah’s Ryan Walters scored a shorthanded goal 3:24 after Idaho took a 1-0 lead before the Steelheads took a 2-1 lead 1:53 later 28 seconds after that power-play expired.
“The puck didn't go in like we wanted it to,” said Branham. “Kevin Carr had a tough one tonight but we know that he will bounce back. As a group, we understand that we are playing good hockey. We aren't seeing the results that we want and we know that we have to work that much harder and pay attention to the details that much more. Once we get that confidence and that swagger it's going to be a good feeling.”
In the second period, the Steelheads scored two goals in 2:25 to cap off four goals on their first ten shots to take a 4-1 lead. Angus Redmond replaced Kevin Carr at that point and made eight-straight saves to finish the game.
Utah outshot Idaho 25-12 over the final two periods.
“We have to learn from it, have to move on but we can't dwell on it,” said Branham. “We went through this tough stretch last year around the same time and we came through a much better hockey team and we are going to do the same thing this year. We have a lot of heart, a lot of pieces. I'm seeing a lot of good things. Good things are to come right now. Our goal scoring lull is soon to be a thing of the past.”
