West Valley City, Utah – The Idaho Steelheads defeated the Utah Grizzlies 3-2 in a shootout Monday night at Maverik Center.
The Grizzlies went past regulation for the 10th time in 22 games to collect a standings point as they’ve recorded standings points in 13 of 22 total games this year.
“We are playing good hockey,” said Head Coach/General Manager Tim Branham. “That's the frustrating part for me as a coach is we are playing great hockey and the boys aren't being rewarded for it.”
Utah erased two one-goal deficits to tie the contest as they played to a scoreless third period to force overtime.
“The boys with the way that they are playing and with the heart that they have; it's just a matter of time before we are talking about an eight-game winning streak,” said Branham.
After Idaho took a 1-0 lead 11:03 into the first period, Brad Navin worked the puck up ahead to Ryan Misiak who found Ryan Olsen (4) on a two-on-one to tie the contest with 2:06 left in the first period.
The Steelheads took a 2-1 lead 3:09 into the second period before Ryan Walters picked up a turnover and scored with 1:26 left in the second period.
Grizzlies goaltender Kevin Carr stopped all ten shots that he saw in the third period and three in overtime. He turned aside 28 of 30 in the contest.
After a scoreless overtime, Idaho scored on two of three shots, while Utah was denied on two looks.
“Their spirits are still up,” said Branham. “We are getting standings points. The boys want it. They want it really bad. The pucks aren't going in for them right now. They aren't getting rewarded for their hard work but you don't quit and this team never does and they battled back to get points and I am proud of them.”
