Two of the largest markets in minor league sports face-off in this ECHL first round playoff series when the Grizzlies based in the heart of Salt Lake in West Valley City take on the Americans who are based in the Dallas-Fort Worth suburb of Allen.
Not Even Close
The Grizzlies finished four points ahead of Missouri and five points ahead of Alaska in their furious run up the standings over the final four months of the regular season; going 27-13-4-1 to finish the 2016-2017 campaign after December 21. In the process, they clinched their tenth-straight playoff appearance.
The Grizzlies are celebrating their tenth-straight trip to the Kelly Cup Playoffs by offering $10 Corner Plaza Tickets for all first round games played at Maverik Center. The offer must be mentioned at the arena box office when purchasing tickets.
Playoff Wild Wednesday
Wednesday, April 19, when the Grizzlies return home for game three, will be a playoff Wild Wednesday that will feature $2 Hot Dogs, $2 Soft Drinks, $2 Churros, $4 Grizzlies Goal-Den Ale and $5 Student Tickets.
Both Teams Hot
Utah comes into the playoffs having won seven of their final eight regular season games while Allen brings a 16-game unbeaten streak into the postseason at 15-0-1-0.
Second Half Surges Since Last Meeting
Utah won 25 of their 37 games after their last meeting with Allen on December 31, while Allen won 29 of their 49 games after January 1.
Opening On The Road
The Grizzlies open the playoffs on the road where they went 16-6-2-0 in their final 24 road games after a 2-10 start away from Maverik Center.
Utah closed the regular season by not allowing a power-play goal in a season-high five-straight games and in nine of their final 13 games. They went 16-for-17 on the penalty-kill over the final seven games and will be tested by an Allen power-play that finished third in the ECHL at just under 25-percent.
Anaheim Ducks prospect Kevin Boyle started the final six games of the regular season for Utah and went 5-1 with a 2.16 Goals-Against-Average and a .919 Save Percentage. He went 8-2 in his final 10 starts with Utah going back to February 1 with a 1.98 Goals-Against-Average and a .932 Save Percentage as he allowed two goals or less in eight of his final ten starts.
Utah had five different players over the final eight games have a game with two goals. Michael Pelech did twice, Zac Larraza, Jon Puskar, Garrett Haar and C.J. Eick each did it once.
