West Valley City, Utah – The Missouri Mavericks beat the Utah Grizzlies (35-29-5-2) 3-2 Friday night at Maverik Center before 6,702 fans.
The loss snaps the Grizzlies six-game winning streak and kept them from clinching their tenth-straight playoff appearance on their own this evening.
The Mavericks scored two goals 1:26 apart in the first 5:39 of the contest to build an early 2-0 lead.
“We came out flat in the first five minutes,” said Head Coach/General Manager Tim Branham. “Missouri popped two in and we dug ourselves too big of a hole.”
Utah finished the first period with 12 of the final 14 shots and 52 of the final 71 shots in the game as they outshot Missouri 54-24 in the contest.
“We worked hard in 198 feet of the ice,” said Head Coach/General Manager Tim Branham. “The last two feet inside the paint, in front of the goaltender we didn’t work hard enough. When we have three-on-twos, two on ones; we are shooting at the goaltenders glove instead of going for rebounds or driving at the net.”
Mathieu Aubin’s 18th of the season got Utah on the board 40 seconds into the second period as he backhanded home a puck working down low with Michael Pelech and Austen Brassard who added assists.
Brassard scored with 11.8 seconds left in the second period to tie the game going to the second intermission as he rolled in a loose puck in front from Pelech and Aubin.
Missouri batted a puck out of the air on an odd-man rush with 7:38 left in regulation to take a 3-2 lead.
54 shots by Utah beat their previous season-high of 44 shots.
Kevin Boyle stopped 21 of 24 as his personal four-game winning streak was snapped.
