West Valley City- The Alaska Aces defeated the Utah Grizzlies 3-2 in overtime Friday night at Maverik Center.
“I thought we had a lot of good chances, lots of good looks for us in this game,” said Head Coach/General Manager Tim Branham. “The puck didn't go in for us as many times as we would like. I thought Carr made some big saves and they got a lucky bounce in overtime, that's for sure.”
The Aces scored the game-winner on a puck knocked in on an odd-man rush 2:08 into the overtime after Alaska tied the game at two with 10:45 left in regulation.
“Overall, we need to play with more desperation, more of a consistent effort,” said Branham. “I thought for the situation that we were in that Alaska was ripe for the picking, especially early on in the game and we weren't able to capitalize on that.”
After the Aces took a 1-0 lead 1:37 into the second period on a four-on-four goal, Utah tied the game on a penalty-shot at 14:41 of the second period as Jon Puskar scored his 18th goal of the year.
Utah took a 2-1 lead 1:29 later at 16:10 as Austen Brassard scored on a three-on-two up ice from Cam Reid and Ralph Cuddemi.
The Grizzlies outshot Alaska 12-6 in the first period, but was unable to score on goaltender Kevin Carr who stopped the first 17 shots that he saw and 29 of 31 in the game.
Utah goaltender Ryan Faragher stopped 27 of 30 shots in the contest.
