West Valley City, Utah - The Idaho Steelheads defeated the Utah Grizzlies 8-2 Friday night at Maverik Center before 6,154 fans to start Pink In The Rink Weekend Powered by Bountiful Mazda.
After the game, fans took the ice to paint the names of loved ones affected by breast cancer.
"You just have to throw this one away and refocus your energy for tomorrow's game," said Head Coach/General Manager Tim Branham. "We had several guys battling through illness, but we still have to go out and work hard."
The loss is just Utah’s second in nine games against Idaho this season and only their second loss in the last 11 games overall. It is the Grizzlies first loss to a team other than Alaska since January 11. Idaho got revenge on Utah who swept them in three-straight games two weeks ago in Boise.
“We will come back tomorrow, this game is already forgotten, we will be alright,” said forward Travis Howe. “At the end of the day, no excuses.”
Idaho broke the scoreless tie 6:13 into the first period and made it 2-0 2:07 later at 8:20 of the frame. They closed the period with two goals 52 seconds apart, including a power-play marker, to make it 4-0 after 1. Troy Redmann replaced Ryan Faragher in goal after the fourth score and stopped six-straight to finish the period.
Idaho scored as the Grizzlies protested to make it 5-0 2:13 into the second and four minutes later made it 6-0. Brad Navin scored shorthanded to get Utah on the board with 6:35 left in the second period on a feed from Ralph Cuddemi.
The two teams traded goals to start the third period as Colin Martin scored his 14th goal of the year and his 10th in the last 12 games on a wraparound from C.J. Eick and Jon Puskar.
The Steelheads capped the scoring on a power-play goal with 10:47 left in the game.
The Grizzlies are back home Saturday as Pink In The Rink Weekend Powered by B-Mazda continues. The Grizzlies will be selling $5 Pink Grizzlies Pink In The Rink T-Shirts in the team store for ticket holders of games the game with a portion of the proceeds going back to fight breast cancer while supplies and sizes last.
The Grizzlies are home Monday for their next Maverik Monday and a President’s Day Matinee at 1:30 p.m. Fans can get buy 1 get 1 free tickets with their Maverik Adventure Club Card. In addition, there will be a $6 Lunch Combo that includes a hot dog, fries and a soft drink. Churros will be available for $2.
