Game Day Blog Entry: November 27, 2016

The Grizzlies will look to turn their shots into goals. They are sixth in the ECHL averaging 34.17 shots-per-game and have moved into sixth in the ECHL allowing just 29.39 shots-per-game after holding Alaska to 45 shots in the first two games of this series. The Aces came into the weekend averaging 37 shots-per-game which was second in the ECHL.

 
Last night marked the second time this year that Utah has outshot the opposition by 22 shots. 20 shots allowed by Utah was the second fewest shots allowed in a game this season after allowing 19 to Allen on November 11.
 
Utah has recorded standings points in four of their six games this year when they have at least 40 shots.
 
Only Florida with 178 more shots than their opponent and Orlando with 135 more shots than their opponent have recorded more shots this year than the Grizzlies plus-86 in shot differential.
 
Utah has outshot Alaska 56-27 since the start of the third period on Friday.
 
The Grizzlies came out strong playing three games in less than 48 hours three weeks ago as they outshot Tulsa 10-5 in the first period on Sunday, November 6.

Last night, everything the stats said went against Utah.

 
They were previously 6-2-0-1 when scoring first and it ended a stretch of five-straight games where the opposition has scored first on the road.
 
They were previously 4-1 when leading after one period.
 
They were previously 5-2-1-1 when scoring a power-play goal.
 
They were previously 12-1 in their last 13 games against Alaska and 8-2-2-0 in Anchorage.
 
Ryan Faragher had a five-game winning streak snapped in Anchorage.
 
Utah goaltending had previously allowed three goals or less in seven of the last eight and two goals or less in regulation in four of the last five.
 
They had previously outscored the opposition 4-2 in the second periods and 18-13 on the season.
 
Giving the stats another chance, let’s try this:
 
Utah is 2-0 coming off of a Friday night loss on the road and all three Friday night losses this year have been by four goals.
 
Utah is 2-1 on the road and 4-2-0-1 overall on back-to-backs.
 
Utah is 2-0 on the road and 4-1-0-1 on the second game of a series this year.
 
And the final stat, the only one that has really mattered; Utah is 7-2 when scoring three goals or more and 0-6-1-1 when scoring two goals or less.

Individual Notes
Mathieu Aubin has three goals in his last four games and three goals and two assists in his last six games.
Tim Daly has a power-play assist in three-straight games and an assist in four of the last six games overall.

The Grizzlies come to Alaska at 7-7-1-1 to open a six-game road trip. Last year, Utah’s first trip to Alaska came in November as they entered the series at 3-3-1-0. Utah swept the series and started a stretch of five-straight wins and an 8-2-1-0 stretch.

Utah went 5-1 in Alaska last year and they’re 8-2-2-0 the last two seasons in Anchorage. Ryan Faragher went 5-0 in Alaska last year with a .945 save percentage and a 1.80 Goals-Against-Average. Faragher will play all three games this weekend for the Grizzlies with Kevin Boyle getting reassigned by Anaheim back to San Diego after stopping 32 of 35 shots on Wednesday.

Erik Higby had two goals and two assists for four points in six games in Alaska game last year against the team he played the second half of the season for in 2014-2015.

Alaska goaltender Michael Garteig, who’s 7-1 on the season has been reassigned by Vancouver to their AHL affiliate in Utica.  Garteig is third in the ECHL in Save Percentage at .926 and sixth in Goals-Against-Average at 2.39. Meanwhile, leading scorer Stephen Perfetto, who has 22 points in 13 games on seven goals and 15 assists, was loaned to Colorado’s AHL affiliate in San Antonio on Monday.

The Situation
-The Grizzlies wrap up a six-game home stand tonight with the Allen Americans who return to Utah for the second time this home stand.
-Utah and Allen met November 11 and 12 at Maverik Center with the Americans winning 5-1 on the 11th and 3-2 in a shootout on November 12.
-Utah will be in Alaska Friday, Saturday and Sunday to open a six-game road trip that will also take them to Wheeling, West Virginia for two games and Fort Wayne, Indiana for the finale.
-The Grizzlies will return home for another six-game home stand Friday, December 9-Wednesday, December 21 to continue six at home, six on the road and six at home over 41 days.

Against Allen
-Utah had their second and third highest shot outputs of the season on November 11 and 12 against Allen with 41 shots on November 11 and 40 shots on November 12 as Allen Goaltender Riley Gill stopped 78 of 81 shots.
-Utah has 39 or more shots in five-straight home games against Allen.
-Utah has 39 or more shots in six of eight games against Allen over the last two seasons.
-Ryan Faragher has stopped 58 of 61 in two games against Allen and received two goals in two games offensively over the last two seasons.

Other Notes
-Ralph Cuddemi (45) and Shane Walsh (44) are the top two rookies in the league in shots on goal.
-Utah recorded 17 of the final 28 shots in their game against Adirondack on Saturday after the Thunder built a 17-7 shot lead in the second period.
-Utah is one of five ECHL teams to not allow a power-play goal and the only team in the Mountain Division.
-Faragher ranks fourth in the ECHL with 613 minutes played.
 
PP Notes
-The Grizzlies have scored a power-play goal in three of the last four games.
-Utah has scored a power-play goal in four of five games this year when being awarded four power-plays or more.
-Utah went 1-6 on the power-play and 7-8 on the penalty-kill against Allen on November 11 and 12.

 The Standings

-The Grizzlies trail Colorado by two points and Idaho by one point for first place in Mountain Division.

Attendance
-Utah’s crowd of 6,671 fans Friday night was the third largest of 11 ECHL games on Friday and moved them into fifth in the 28-team ECHL averaging 5,178 fans-per-game through eight contests.
-Utah has drawn at least 5,195 fans-per-game for an average of 5,898 through the first four games of this home stand.

Saturday’s
-Utah is 2-0-0-1 at home and 4-0-0-1 overall on Saturday nights.
-Utah is 28-10-1-3 at home under Tim Branham on Saturday nights.
-Utah is 5-0-0-1 in their last six Saturday night games at home.
 
Early Starts
-Utah scored 2:45 into the first period Monday and 4:15 into the first period Friday to continue their consistency of early goals here at Maverik Center.
-Utah has scored in the first 4:20 in three of the first four contests on this home stand and in four of their last six home games after all.
-Utah has scored first in all eight home games so far this year.
-Utah has outscored the opposition 16-10 in the first periods this season and 4-0 in this series.
-Utah has outscored the opposition 30-21 in the first two periods.
 
Scoring Streaks

-Utah looks for their second three-game unbeaten streak of the season with a result tonight.
 
The Standings
-The Grizzlies completed Monday in a three-way tie for first place in the Mountain Division tied with Idaho and Colorado with all three teams having 15 points and a .577 winning percentage.
-They now trail by two points with both one game in hand on Idaho and Colorado who have both won games since Monday.
 
Attendance
-With three-straight crowds of over 5,000 and two more large crowds expected this weekend, the Grizzlies currently ranks sixth in the 27-team ECHL in attendance and could be fourth in the league by tomorrow night.
 
Acquisitions 
-Utah has acquired forward Erik Bradford from Toledo in exchange for future considerations.
-Bradford, a second year pro, had one goal and one assist with Toledo and 10 goals and 22 assists for 32 points in 65 games last year with Orlando. 
-He had 24 of his 32 points in 41 games after January 1 last year.
-Utah has also acquired Sam Windle from Wheeling in exchange for Future Considerations.
-Windle had one assist in five games with Wheeling and had five assists in 37 games last year with Reading and Norfolk after four years of college at Bemidji State University.

Good Home Starts Continue
-Utah has now scored the game’s first goal in all seven games at Maverik Center thus far, with a  5-1-0-1 home record and an ECHL leading 73 regular season home wins since the start of the 2013-2014 season.
-Utah has scored the first goal in all seven games this year.
 
When We Win
-Utah is 2-0 at home and 4-0 overall when leading after one period.
-Utah is 5-1-0-1 and 3-0 at home when scoring a power-play goal.
-The Grizzlies are 4-1 when Shane Walsh scores a goal and 4-0-0-1 when Jon Puskar scores a goal.
 
Close Or Not
-Three of Utah’s wins have been in overtime or a shootout by one goal and three of Utah’s wins have been in regulation by three goals.
 
Balanced Scoring
-12 Grizzlies players have recorded multiple-point games this year and six have recorded multiple-points twice in C.J. Eick, Jon Puskar, Austen Brassard, Tim Daly, Colin Martin and Evan Stoflet.
-14 Grizzlies players have recorded a power-play point with Colin Martin, Ralph Cuddemi and Taylor Richart all recording two.
 
Ralph Cuddemi
-Cuddemi has scored all three goals this year in the first period and has scored Utah’s two fastest goals of the year.
-He scored 2:45 in Monday after scoring 3:20 into the contest on October 28.

Other Notes
-Utah has allowed their three fewest shot outputs in their last six games. At 24, 19 and 26.
-Utah is fourth in the ECHL in shots at just over 34 entering tonight.
-Shane Walsh (37) and Ralph Cuddemi (38) are third and fourth in the ECHL in shots by rookies.

The Situation

-The Grizzlies play game three of their six-game home stand tonight against Adirondack.
-Utah hosts Adirondack Friday and Saturday as well before completing their six-game home stand against Allen on Wednesday, November 23.
 
This Morning
-The Grizzlies attended the funeral of West Valley City Police Officer Cody Brotherson here at Maverik Center.
-Officer Brotherson was killed just blocks from Maverik Center in the early morning hours of November 6, 2016 while on duty for the West Valley City Police.

Over The Weekend
-Utah led the ECHL in attendance as 6,463 fans attended the Veterans Day game Friday and 5,263 attended Saturday’s game for a total of 11,726 fans over the weekend.
-Utah totaled 41 shots Friday and 40 shots Saturday as Allen goaltender Riley Gill stopped 78 of 81 shots.
-Kenton Helgesen was the only Grizzlies player to score in both games as he tallied an assist in each contest.
-Utah scored the first goal in each game and has scored the game’s first goal in all six home games thus far.
-Utah went 1-3 on PP Saturday after an 0-3 Friday and went 4-4 on PK Saturday after going 3-4 Friday.

Leading Scorers
-The Grizzlies are currently led in scoring by three returning second year players from last year’s team.
-Jon Puskar, in his second full ECHL season, leads the team with five goals and has eight points.
-Tim Daly (two goals, six assists) and Kenton Helgesen (two goals, six assists) both have eight points as well.

Adirondack Ties
-Adirondack is the ECHL affiliate of Calgary as was Utah from 2009-2013.
-Alexandre Carrier started the season with Adirondack  before being acquired by Utah on October 29.
-The Thunder come in at 7-2-1-2 having split six points in Idaho Wednesday, Friday and Saturday, making both teams .500 in Idaho this year.
 
Maverik Mondays
-Utah is 9-4-2  at home under Tim Branham on Maverik Mondays and has averaged 6,458 fans-per-game on them, drawing nearly 100,000 fans to the arena over the last four seasons.
 
Back In The Lineup
-The Grizzlies have also added Brandon McNally back to the lineup after he was called up to San Diego for two games after being called up on November 6.
 
Trade
-The Grizzlies have acquired forward Robbie Donahoe from Manchester in exchange for future considerations and he will make his Grizzlies debut tonight. 
-He played four games this year with Manchester and was a plus-11 with Manchester last year in 43 games and totaled two goals and six assists.
-He started his professional career in the SPHL with Knoxville in 2014-2015 after college at Middlebury College Hockey.

Last Night
-Utah outshot Allen 41-19 in a 5-1 loss after taking a 1-0 lead 4:20 into the contest.
-Utah outshot Allen 32-7 over the final 40 minutes.
-Utah led for 5:01 and trailed for the final 49:15 of the game.
-Ralph Cuddemi led Utah with seven shots, Jon Puskar had six and Mike Banwell had five shots.
-Taylor Richart was Utah’s only player with a plus.
 
Shots On Goal
-Utah has outshot the opposition in five-straight games and in nine of eleven games this year.
-Utah has outshot the opposition by 19, three and 22 in the last three games for a plus forty-four in their last three games.
-The Grizzlies have 37 or more shots in three of their last five games and 41 or more shots in two of the last three games.
-Utah has allowed their fewest shots this season in two of the last three games and 23 and 19.
-Utah has outshot the opposition 382-324 this season and a plus-58 shot differential.
 
The All-Time Series
-Utah has 39 or more shots in four-straight home games against Allen.
-Utah has 39 or more shots in five of seven games against Allen.

 -Utah and Allen meet for the first of four meetings on the season, with three taking place at Maverik Center.

-The two teams will meet again tomorrow before Adirondack comes to Utah for games Monday, Friday and Saturday.
 
Last Year
-Utah went 2-1-1-0 against Allen at Maverik Center and 0-2 in Allen.
-Utah scored four goals or more in their final three home games against Allen.
-Utah had 39 shots or more in their final three home games against Allen.
-Utah had 39 shots or more in four of six games total against Allen.
-Utah went 4-15 on the power-play against Allen at home and 13-18 on the penalty-kill.
-Ryan Faragher appeared in one game against Allen and stopped 23 of 24 in a 2-0 loss in Texas on February 5.
-No current Utah player had more than two points against Allen last year with Jon Puskar’s one goal and one assist.
 
Good Starts Overall

The Grizzlies are 6-3 for the second-straight year and regardless of today have guaranteed themselves first place in the Mountain Division after four weeks of play for the second-straight year.

 
Only Toledo (8) and Tulsa (7) have more wins than the Grizzlies in the ECHL.
 
A plus-19 shot differential last night at 43-24 was the largest of the season. 24 shots was the fewest shots allowed by the Grizzlies and 43 was the second largest shot output on the season for the Grizzlies.  Utah is sixth in the ECHL with 34.56 shots-per-game.
 
Utah has 68 shots in their previous five periods, which is an average of 13.5 shots-per-period since the second period Friday night.
 
Last night was the first time this year that the Grizzlies have scored two power-play goals in a game at two-for-four.  Utah was 8-2 last year when scoring two or more power-play goals.
 
The Grizzlies closed the game with five of the final seven goals after falling behind 1-0 3:55 into the first period.
 
Tim Daly has a four-game scoring streak with one goal and four assists in his last four. Kenton Helgesen has two goals and three assists for five points in the last four games.
 
Carlos Amestoy has three assists in his last four games played. Ralph Cuddemi has two goals and two assists for four points in five games with Utah.
 
Daly has been an even or better in seven of eight games, Helgesen is an even or better in all six games.
 
Travis Howe has fought in three of the four games he has played this year and added his first ECHL goal last night.
 
Tulsa was in Missouri last night and dropped just their second game of the season 10-3 to the Mavericks.
 
Utah and the Oilers will next see each other for two games at Maverik Center on January 27 and January 28.
 

Game Day Blog Entry: November 5, 2016

Despite the two losses to start the trip, the Grizzlies still lead the Mountain Division in wins and have the best winning percentage in the Division at .625 and a 5-3 record.

Colin Martin had a Utah season-high with eight shots on goal last night.

Kenton Helgesen has one goal and three assists for four points in five games after totaling two goals and three assists for five points in 31 games last year in his rookie season. Helgesen is an even or better in all five games.

The Grizzlies are 3-0 on Saturday nights so far and remain 5-0 when they score first having surrendered the first goal in each game so far this week.

Utah has trailed each game 3-2 going to the third period in each game this week, but has been unable to get the 3-3 equalizing goal.

Utah has scored in the first two minutes of the second period each night, but then surrendered back-to-back goals.

Two roster moves will be announced at 1 p.m. when ECHL Transactions are released.

Kevin Boyle has been reassigned to the Grizzlies by Anaheim after one start with San Diego. He stopped 30 of 33 shots in an overtime loss in Manitoba last Friday. His 2.93 Goals-Against-Average and .900 Save Percentage lead San Diego goaltending this year.

This is the first time a pro hockey team from Utah has played a team in Wichita since 1982-1983 when the Salt Lake Golden Eagles played the Wichita Wind.
 
The Grizzlies scored three or more goals for the seventh-straight game to start the year on Wednesday. Utah was 35-5-3-0 when scoring three or more goals last year and 321-90-52 the last 12 seasons in the ECHL when scoring three or more goals.
 
Utah responded to their first loss of the season on October 21 by outshooting Idaho 23-5 in the first period and taking a 2-0 lead on October 22 on the way to a 6-5 overtime win.
 
Utah (5-2) and Colorado (4-2-1-1) remain tied for first place in the Mountain Division after the Eagles also lost on Wednesday; blowing a 3-1 third period lead to Reading.
 

Game Day Blog Entry: November 2, 2016

Both teams are starting four games in five nights tonight with Wednesday, Sunday meetings against each other. Utah will be in Wichita Friday and Saturday while Tulsa has a home and home with Missouri with the Friday game in Oklahoma.

 
The home team controlled this series last year with Utah being 3-0-0-1 at home and Tulsa being 2-1.
 
Coming into tonight, both teams are off to good starts at home. Tulsa is 4-0 at home as are the Grizzlies who will look to hand the Oilers their first home loss of the season this evening.
 
Ryan Faragher was 4-0 with a 1.77 goals-against-average and a .923 save percentage against Tulsa last year.
 
Phil Pietroniro led Utah last year with a plus-five against Tulsa in five games.
 
Three of Utah’s five wins have come past regulation, two of Tulsa’s six wins have come past regulation.
 
The Grizzlies have added a pair of Ducks prospects to the roster in Brian Cooper and Keaton Thompson. Cooper was drafted in the fifth round by Anaheim in 2012 and is in his first pro season after college at the University of Nebraska-Omaha. Thompson was drafted in the third round of the 2013 draft and is also in his first pro season after college at the University of North Dakota. Both players will make their pro debuts tonight. 
 
Utah has also added forward Alexandre Carrier, a veteran of 128 ECHL games and 18 AHL games. He was acquired from Adirondack on Saturday.
