T.J. Syner was selected by Missouri as future considerations from last year’s trade that brought Taran Kozun to Utah. Don’t look for Syner in Missouri however as him and his cousin Barry Almeida have already signed in Italy for next year.
As things are slow in the summer, we can analyze some more of the 2016-2017 schedule. 19 of the Grizzlies first 32 games will be played outside of the West Division. Only five of the 14 opponents next year missed the playoffs last year in: Rapid City, Alaska, Wichita, Tulsa and Orlando. Wichita, Rapid City and Alaska are the only teams on the schedule next year that had a losing record last year. Utah will see three of the four conference finalists in Allen, Fort Wayne and Wheeling; with South Carolina not on the schedule for the 12th-straight ECHL season. Florida, Missouri and Adirondack are the only three teams the Grizzlies will see for the first time. Wichita, Missouri and Florida are the only three road teams that the Grizzlies will visit for the first time. While vacationing in Florida two weeks ago, we happened to drive by the Everblades Arena in Estero on the way from Miami to Tampa.
Alaska has signed an ECHL affiliation agreement with Vancouver after missing the playoffs for the second-straight year and finishing with the third worst record in the ECHL last season along with last in the West Division.
Glen Gulutzan, who coached in Las Vegas until 2009 and faced the Grizzlies in the 2008 Western Conference Finals has been named Head Coach of the Calgary Flames after coaching the Dallas Stars from 2011-2013.
The hockey season came to an abrupt end on Sunday with the ECHL, AHL and NHL all crowning champions in a 72 hour stretch.
No blog next week due to ECHL Marketing and Communications meetings.

Former Grizzlies defenseman Trevor Daley (2003-2004) is a member of the Pittsburgh Penguins, who are one win away from winning a Stanley Cup. Daley was hurt against Tampa Bay on May 20 in game four of the Eastern Conference Finals. He would join Trevor Lewis (2012, 2014 Los Angeles), Scott Niedermayer and Ric Jackman (2007 Anaheim) and Ray Whitney (2006 Carolina) as former Grizzlies who have recently won Stanley Cups. Former Grizzlies goaltender Aaron Dell (2013-2014) is currently the third goaltender for San Jose.
One of the best athlete follows on Twitter is goaltender Ryan Faragher (@Fedz29) who regularly tweets about hockey, music and his travels.
Rod Aldoff, who played for the Grizzlies in 1996-97, was named Head Coach of the ECHL’s Norolk Admirals Monday.
Three opponents for Utah next season already will have new coaches next year after a coaching change in Wichita and new coaches in Missouri and Florida as well following departures there in the last few weeks.
The Allen Americans defeated Wheeling four games to two and won three-straight games to win the ECHL’s Kelly Cup on Thursday night. Both organizations in the finals were easy to root for with good coaches and teams who rallied from several deficits in games and series. If you’re one of the other 26 ECHL teams, you’re hoping Allen Head Coach Steve Martinson finally gets rewarded over the summer after winning his fourth-straight league championship last night and tenth championship as a Head Coach overall. You would think that someone at the next level would want a coach who gets the most out of his players and does nothing but win. He’s a good man too. Steve played 32 games for Salt Lake during the 1984-1985 season and has lots of good memories from being here.
