Igor Bobkov, who didn’t play last night, moved into the league lead in goals-against-average after South Carolina’s Jeff Jakaitis dropped from first in the league to fifth by allowing seven goals in a 7-3 home loss to Fort Wayne. Bobkov is in a two-way tie for second in save percentage at .923 behind three others at .924 in Bakersfield’s Laurant Brossoit, Kalamazoo’s Jordan Binnington and Jakaitis. Aaron Dell moved from fifth to fourth last night in goals-against-average to 2.14 despite giving up three goals.
The Grizzlies at 4-1 in Colorado have a chance for a fifth win tonight. Utah has won five games in a visiting building just once since joining the ECHL and it happened when they went 5-1 in Idaho in 2011-2012.
Utah got the power-play going last night with a two-for-five effort, after having not scored a power-play goal in six of their last ten games. In the last three games in which they have scored a power-play goal, they have scored two. The Grizzlies scored on their final two chances last night to add to their lead in the third period after an owe-for-three start.
Utah has drawn 39 power-plays against Colorado this year, with the Eagles drawing 31 against Utah.
Utah has drawn 307 power-plays this year, while going shorthanded 284 times. Only four teams in Alaska (54), Cincinnati (40), Reading (39), and
South Carolina (26) have had more power-plays than their opposition than Utah’s 23.
Danick Paquette (one assist) and David Vallorani (two assists) both got back on the board last night after they each had seven-game scoring streaks snapped on Wednesday.

The Grizzlies look for a quick rebound after previously going 5-0 in game two of a series on the road since January. Tim Branham reiterated with “Monty In The Morning” on 1320 KFAN this morning that the Grizzlies and Eagles were pretty close on scoring chances Wednesday despite the Grizzlies being outshot 31-20, Utah just kept missing the net on shots.
The Grizzlies need at least a point tonight to hold onto third place in the Conference entering tomorrow.
Charles Sarault has joined the Grizzlies after being assigned yesterday by the Anaheim Ducks from their AHL affiliate in Norfolk. He was second in the Ontario Hockey League in scoring last year with 22 goals and 86 assists for 108 points with Sarnia and led the league in assists overall. He had six goals and eight assists for 14 points in 43 games with Norfolk this year.
Utah’s penalty-kill is 17 for their last 18 and the Grizzlies are 10 for their last 11 against Colorado the last four games versus the Eagles fifth ranked power-play. The Grizzlies 17/18 stretch has come against three of the top five power-plays in the ECHL in Stockton (1), Idaho (3) and Colorado (5).
The Grizzlies have lost eight games in regulation in their last 38 contests and they have all gone down to the wire. Six of the eight losses have been decided by a goal and two were within a goal before a late empty-netter. The last game the Grizzlies lost by two goals or more was December 20 in Alaska. The Grizzlies have only lost six games this year by more than a goal not including empty-netters.

Danick Paquette, who finished as runner-up for ECHL Player of the Week with five goals and two assists for seven points in three games last week, also leads Utah in scoring against Colorado this year with five goals and five assists.
Paquette and David Vallorani each need points tonight to set new Utah season-highs with eight-game scoring streaks. Vallorani is second on Utah in scoring with four goals and four assists for eight points in five games against the Eagles.
The Grizzlies have four players with five or more points this year against the Eagles, who’s top scorer in the season series is Trent Daavettila with five assists.
The Grizzlies bring a six-game winning streak in the season series into Loveland with a 6-1 record against the Eagles this year. All games have been decided by two goals or less, three of seven have gone past regulation.
Utah is 3-0 in Colorado this year after previously winning just 3 times in 12 games in the last two seasons here. However, four of the Grizzlies six all-time wins in Colorado have needed more than regulation.
Utah needs one win in Loveland this week, to enter the final six games of the year in third place in the Western Conference.
Third in the conference is the highest the Grizzlies have been this late in the year since they joined the ECHL in 2005. They finished as the fourth seed in 2009-2010 with a 34-29-4-5 record.
The Grizzlies have both goaltenders in uniform tonight as both Igor Bobkov at 16-6-2-2 and Aaron Dell at 15-6-0-2 also rank third and fifth in the ECHL in goals-against-average respectively at 2.07 and 2.10.

-The Grizzlies have scored four goals or more in a season-high five of their last nine games.
-The Grizzlies are 4 for their last 10 on the power-play after going 2 for their previous 23.

-In four-straight games against Idaho in February, Utah went 4-20 on the power-play and 14-16 on the penalty-kill.
-David Vallorani and Danick Paquette can tie Utah season-highs with points tonight, which would give them points in seven-straight games.

Game Day Blog Entry: March 21

-The Grizzlies look for their third-straight win tonight hosting Colorado before Idaho comes to Maverik Center Saturday.
-Utah currently leads the Eagles by ½ a game in the Western Conference standings for the third spot in the conference.
-Utah has 12 games left on the regular season including tonight with 7 games at home and 5 on the road.
With 12 games left in the regular season, the Grizzlies are already two wins ahead of last year and on pace for their best ECHL season since joining the league in 2005-2006, when they went 36-30-6.
Vs The Eagles
-Utah has won five-straight games versus Colorado and is 5-1 versus the Eagles this year.
-Three of six games have gone past regulation with Utah winning in overtime on November 18 and in shootouts on February 12 and 14.
-All five games have been tied in the third period and four of five have been decided by a goal.
-All five games have been within a goal in the final two minutes.
-Utah and Colorado meet again next Wednesday, Friday and Saturday with the top team in this four game in nine day stretch undoubtedly being guaranteed home ice advantage in the first round of the playoffs.
Close Games Continue
-After snapping 12-straight one-goal games Saturday with a 4-1 win in Stockton, the Grizzlies got back down to business with a 2-1 win over Stockton on Wednesday.
-38 of the Grizzlies 61 games have been decided by a goal and 47 of 61 games were within a goal before a late empty-netter.
-The Grizzlies outshot Stockton 45-22 in the game, Danick Paquette and David Vallorani each had one goal and one assist.
-45 shots was the second most this year and four off of the season high.
-The Grizzlies have had a player leave the game and not return in three-straight contests with Brent Gwidt leaving last Friday, Andrew O’Brien on Saturday and Michael Pelech Wednesday.
-Adam Pineault returned from injury on Wednesday after missing 41-straight games and having not played since December 6.
-David Vallorani has five goals and three assists for eight points in his last seven games.
-He has scored the Grizzlies game-winning goal in their last three wins.
-Danick Paquette has a five-game scoring streak with three goals and two assists for five points and a plus-five in his last five games.
-He has a career-high 15 goals and leads the Grizzlies with four game-winning goals this year.

Three-Game Scoring Streak
Grizzlies assistant captain Channing Boe is on a season-high three-game scoring streak with three assists in that stretch.
-Phil Mangan, who joined Utah just in time for this 24-7-2-3 stretch, has six assists in his last seven games and 9 goals and 18 assists for 27 points in 35 games with Utah, having played in all 35 games since being acquired from Fort Wayne on December 26.

The Grizzlies open their second to last home stand of the year tonight where they will play seven of their final 12 games.
Oddly enough, this is the third and final time that the Grizzlies will play Stockton at Maverik Center; despite making six separate trips to Stockton this year for nine games.
Tonight starts a huge week in the Western Conference with Utah hosting Stockton and Colorado visiting Idaho. Ironically, those would be two of the playoff matchups in the Western Conference if the post season started today with Utah as the three seed, Colorado as the fourth seed, Idaho as the fifth and Stockton as the sixth.
Utah hasn’t lost to a Pacific Division opponent at home since a 3-2 loss to San Francisco on November 30. They are 6-0-0-2 against the Pacific Division at Maverik Center since and 9-2-0-3 against the Pacific Division at home this year.
A win tonight would be Utah’s 31st of the year. They haven’t had 31 wins this early in the season since February 24, 2006 after a 3-0 win in Long Beach.

Game Day Blog Entry: March 15

The Grizzlies have been a good weekend team as of late, going 9-1 on Saturdays since Christmas as they look to avoid just their second two-game losing streak in the last 34 games. Utah is 4-1-0-1 coming off of a loss since Christmas.
Utah has been a strong back-to-back team this year at 12-6-0-1 and 13-4-1-1 in game two of a series.
The Grizzlies have now played 12-straight one-goal games and they have only allowed 43 shots; 21 and 22 respectively in the last two games against Stockton. Power-plays are even at 11 a side. Danick Paquette has scored a goal in two-straight games here in Stockton.
After three-straight games in Stockton that wraps up tonight, the Grizzlies and Thunder will meet again Wednesday at Maverik Center.
The Grizzlies issue against Stockton, with seven of eight games within a goal in the final 2 minutes has been special teams. They have been outscored 10-3 on special teams and 10-2 on the power-play against Stockton this year. In even-strength situations, Utah has outscored Stockton 13-8, not including a 6-1 loss on November 2 here; without question their worst game of the year. Overall, even-strength scoring is 14-14 between the two teams.

The Grizzlies return to Stockton where they never fully packed up after Saturday’s 3-2 shootout win here. They left about 10 of the team’s 42 travel bags for the week, including my radio gear, and avoided hauling it to and from Salt Lake twice in 5 days.
Jamie MacQueen has been called up to the St. John’s IceCaps for the second time this year and his third AHL call-up overall this season.
New on the trip this week for the Grizzlies, who weren’t in Stockton last week, are Brent Gwidt, Mike Folkes and Drew Daniels who will make his Grizzlies debut tonight after being acquired from Cincinnati earlier this week.
The ECHL trade deadline passed yesterday and all was quiet on the Utah front as Head Coach/General Manager Tim Branham wasn’t in a rush to make a move with the team’s league best 22-6-2-3 run since Christmas; with the great team chemistry that has developed and the strong group of character players in the locker room that have proved to be capable of getting the job done every night.
Another goal by David Vallorani against Stockton last Saturday, now gives him ten points in seven games on five goals and five assists against the Thunder this year to continue to lead all scorers from the two teams.
The Grizzlies are back in Stockton for the fifth of six times this year and for the third time in the last five weekends. Neither team has played since last Saturday.
Game Day Blog Entry: March 8

David Vallorani leads all players in the Utah/Stockton series this year with four goals and five assists. Vinny Scarsella is second among all players with three goals.
This is Utah’s lone game in a 12-day stretch spanning from March 2-March 13.
Jamie MacQueen has a goal in at least two-straight games for the fifth time this year.
Six of the Grizzlies final 15 games and five of their final eight road games will be played in Stockton. Utah starts a stretch of five games in 22 nights in Stockton tonight that includes three separate trips. The Grizzlies will fly home tomorrow, before flying back Thursday for games at Stockton Arena Friday and Saturday of next week.
Last year on this date, the Grizzlies started a ten-game unbeaten streak (4-0-1-5) with a 4-3 overtime loss to Colorado at home. The streak went from March 8-March 29.
The Grizzlies road record, which entering business on December 27 was 1-10 is now 11-14-1-1 and 11-10-1-1 in games not played in Stockton.
Utah is 28-20-3-5 on the year in the fourth spot of the saturated Western Conference. Stockton is 27-22-0-5 and sixth.

Game Day Blog Entry: March 1

Alaska beat Utah last night with two power-play goals and six of the nine power-plays, despite Utah outshooting them 29-24. Jamie MacQueen’s 18th goal of the year got the Grizzlies within a goal with just under 2 minutes remaining. .It marked just the fifth time in 28 home games (2-2-1-0) that the Grizzlies have trailed after one period at home and only the third time all year that the Grizzlies (2-1) have trailed going to the third period at home.
-Utah hosts Alaska tonight at Maverik Center in their final home game in 18 days.
-This is the final regular season meeting of the year between Utah and Alaska.
-Utah will be in Stockton next Friday and March 14 and 15.
-Utah returns home Wednesday, March 19 with Stockton.
-After going 10-3-0-1 playing 14 games in 25 days in seven cities from January 29-February 22, the Grizzlies are now in a stretch of five games in 25 days.
After A Loss At Home
-Utah hasn’t lost two-straight home games at Maverik Center all season.
-The Grizzlies haven’t lost two-straight at home at Maverik Center in the same home stand since February 18-20 last year, with both games against Alaska.
-Utah is 5-0 following a regulation loss at home this year.
-Utah has lost two-straight only once since Christmas and in only four total segments all year.
-Utah is 7-1-0-1 on 0 days rest at home this year and 8-0-1-1 in game two of a series at Maverik Center.
