Game Day Blog Entry: January 31

01/31/2014 11:56 AM - Adrian Denny

The Grizzlies open a season-long nine-game road trip tonight that will take them to every western arena except Alaska in this order: Bakersfield (2), Boise (1), Las Vegas (2), Ontario (1), Colorado (2) and Stockton (1) over a 17-day span.

The Grizzlies had a ten-game road swing two years ago that took them to Las Vegas, Idaho, Bakersfield and Ontario; but they went back to Utah twice in that stretch. In this instance, the Grizzlies will only return to Utah once and it’s after the first two games in Bakersfield.

This trip mirrors the eight-game trip that Utah had following a revised schedule in 2009 that took them to Idaho, Alaska, Bakersfield, Ontario, Stockton and Phoenix from February 23 to March 9 in which the Grizzlies didn’t return home once.

Utah looks to redeem themselves after going 0-2 in Bakersfield December 13 and 14, but beating the Condors in two-straight last weekend at Maverik Center. Utah leads Bakersfield by five points in the Western Conference standings entering tonight.

Utah is 5-0-1-0 in their last six games and riding a six-game unbeaten streak that ties their season high. Utah is 7-1-2-2 in their last 12 games and now a league-best 11-2-2-2 since Christmas.

Utah goaltending has allowed two goals or less in six of their last seven games.

Game Day Blog Entry: January 24

01/24/2014 11:40 AM - Adrian Denny

Utah starts a stretch of four of five games against Bakersfield tonight.  The Grizzlies will be in California Friday and Saturday. Bakersfield took two games from Utah December 13 (4-3) and 14 (5-3) in Bakersfield. The two teams combined for 96 penalty minutes on the 14th after 3 fights off of the opening face-off, in which two players from each side were given game misconducts.

Pat O’Keefe was traded yesterday to Cincinnati as part of future considerations in the Mathieu Aubin and Michael Pelech trade from November November 7. Pelech and Aubin have combined for 15 goals and 30 assists for 45 points in 59 games.

The Grizzlies, with three goaltenders, traded Cody Reichard to Orlando yesterday for future considerations.

A win or any kind of a standings point today ties the Grizzlies longest home unbeaten streak since March of 2010 when they went 8-0-1-0.

Kris Hogg returns from his 14-game ECHL suspension tonight stemming from a slash in Alaska on  December 21. Mathieu Aubin and Channing Boe are day-to-day and  game time decisions to return to the lineup this weekend. Teigan Zahn and Jamie MacQUeen, back from the AHL, will both play tonight as the Grizzlies potentially infuse five huge pieces back into uniform.

Game Day Blog Entry: January 17

01/17/2014 10:07 AM - Adrian Denny

The Grizzlies reload on the fly tonight with Jamie MacQueen loaned to St. John’s (Winnipeg Jets) yesterday and Norm Ezekiel recalled to Norfolk.

Tim Branham has claimed forward Steve Mele off of waivers from South Carolina. He flew from Charleston to Boise this morning and will be with the team tonight.  Mele, who’s brother Tommy, plays for Alaska; had one goal and one assist in eight games with the Stingrays. He had six goals and 11 assists for 17 points in 10 games for Columbus in the SPHL this year.

Defenseman Andrew O’Brien, under contract with Anaheim, will also return to the Grizzlies lineup tonight after suffering an injury in Bakersfield on December 7.

Wednesday night, the Grizzlies couldn’t have done much more besides score another goal. They outshot Idaho 40-22 and drew six of eight power-plays. But Idaho was the only team that scored on the power-play and Utah was the only team that turned a puck over that led to an opponent’s goal.

The Grizzlies haven’t lost two-straight since Christmas and look to finish strong with three games in four nights against Idaho going into this year’s “All-Star Break.”

Game Day Blog Entry: January 15

01/15/2014 11:14 AM - Adrian Denny
This will be Jamie MacQueen’s first game against Idaho since scoring four goals on opening night against them. He was in the AHL when the Grizzlies played here on November 20.

With four games in six nights this week with Idaho, the Grizzlies will look to gain some ground on the team eight points ahead of them and sitting in the fourth spot in the Western Conference as Aaron Dell will look to build on his 8-2-0-1 record with Utah that stands at 6-1-0-1 during this ten-game stretch.

Martin Lee ranks third among ECHL defensemen with 16  assists. He also leads all Grizzlies with a plus-seven.

Three Grizzlies defensemen are point-a-game players over a recent stretch. Gentry Zollars has three assists in two games with Utah, Martin Lee has nine assists over his last seven games and Patrick O’Keefe has one goal and eight assists for nine points in his last nine games. They are also all plus players in the stretch with O’Keefe at a plus-one, Lee a plus-four and Zollars a plus-four.

The Grizzlies who have come from behind in eight of their last 10 games, will look to stop that trend tonight in a place where they have been notorious for falling behind early. In four of their last six game, here they have given up a goal in the first 2:16 of the contest and in seven-straight games they have given up a goal in the first seven minutes and 24 seconds. Being constantly forced to come from behind has seen Utah go 1-4-2-0 with only a shootout win the last two seasons in Boise.

A Grizzlies win today in their first matinee of the season gives them two of three contests in Orlando and five of six games overall since Christmas Break.

Utah has scored five goals each in two of their last four games after previously scoring as many as five goals just twice in their first 25 games.

Friday’s 11 combined goals was the highest scoring game that the Grizzlies were involved in this year.

David Vallorani with six goals in his last four games is one game shy of tying Jamie MacQueen’s streak of a goal in five-straight games earlier this year.

Phil Mangan has scored three goals in the last two games. Brent Gwidt had a career-high three assists in the contest on Friday. Mathieu Aubin has multiple-points in three of his last four contests and a five-game scoring streak with one goal and seven assists. Michael Pelech has a four-game scoring streak with two goals and four assists.

Utah has drawn 31 of 54 power-plays since the Christmas Break, though Friday was the first night they have been unable to score on the one-man advantage despite having a full two minute five-on-three chance.

Game Day Blog Entry: January 3

01/03/2014 2:17 PM - Adrian Denny

The Grizzlies go for their fifth-straight win tonight in Orlando after going 4-0 over the last seven days since Christmas.

Last night, Utah was outshot 37-21 after outshooting Las Vegas 37-21 on Tuesday as the Grizzlies got their power-play rolling and buried their chances.

Phil Mangan became the fourth Grizzlies player of the year to record two goals in a game last night joining Mathieu Aubin, Brent Gwidt and David Vallorani and Jamie MacQueen. He became the first Utah player this year to score to power-play goals in a game however.

Utah’s power-play is eight-for-25 for a 32-percent clip during this four-game winning streak in seven day stretch. Utah has gone 16-for-18 on the penalty-kill over the same stretch.

David Vallorani’s 10th goal of the season last night and fifth in three games tied him with Jamie MacQueen for the team lead.

Mathieu Aubin has six assists in his last four games and has consistently tallied up the points with 16 in 22 games on four goals and 12 assists. Michael Pelech has two goals and four assists in his last five games as the two forwards acquired from Cincinnati in November have really settled into a groove.

Utah looks for back-to-back road wins against the same team for the first time this year.

Game Day Blog Entry: January 2

01/02/2014 9:21 AM - Adrian Denny

Utah looks to build on a modest three-game winning streak tonight as they open a three-game road trip in Orlando. The three-game winning streak is the second longest in the Western Conference behind Bakersfield’s four-game streak. It’s the third longest unbeaten streak in the ECHL with Evansville having gone 4-0-0-2 in their last six games.

Remember that the games in Orlando start at 5 p.m. mountain time today and 5:30 p.m. mountain time Friday. 1320 KFAN will have live coverage each night following “The Drive” with Monty and Gunther.

The Grizzlies yesterday on their way to Orlando, acquired goaltender Cody Reichard from the Fort Wayne Komets in exchange for future considerations. Reichard flew into Florida last night and will be on the ice for morning skate today. Reichard went 16-9-6 last year in his rookie season that he split between Stockton and Houston of the AHL after being named the CCHA Goaltender of the Year in 2010, while also being a Hobey Baker Finalist. He also led Miami-Ohio to a National Championship in 2011. In fact, Utah nearly acquired him at the trade deadline last year; however he would have never played here as he never came back to the ECHL from the AHL the rest of the year.

Utah beat Orlando here in their last ever IHL game against the Solar Bears; a 3-1 contest on March 9, 2001.

All-time in the regular season, Utah went 3-3-0-2 in the regular season playing in Orlando in the IHL from 1995-2001 and 2-0 in the 1996 Turner Cup Finals, won 4 games to none.
