Wednesday, Utah built a 5-0 lead, their largest lead of the season and held on for the 5-2 win. Utah’s four goal second period was the highest scoring period of the year this season. It was their second win in three games against the Eagles in which they got five goals from five different players. Utah has led after one period in 3 of the last 4 games at home and against Colorado.

Utah has scored five or more goals in three of their last five games and four times in the last nine games. Prior to the last nine games, Utah had scored five goals once in the last 25 games.

Tommy Maxwell has three goals and three assists and six of his 14 points this year against Colorado, whom he played for last year. He has scored three goals against the Eagles in his last four games.

The Grizzlies have claimed forward David Toews off of waivers from the Idaho Steelheads and signed him to a contract. He had 9 goals and 14 assists for 23 points and a plus-seven in 31 games with Idaho and also played 26 games in Bakersfield. He is the younger brother of Chicago Blackhawks captain Jonathan Toews.

Utah goaltender Ben Meisner has allowed five goals in regulation in the last three games, four of which have come on the power-play. Meisner has allowed two goals or less in five of seven starts with Utah.

Utah returns home after going 2-0-0-4 on a six-game road swing to Bakersfield, San Francisco and Las Vegas. This is Utah’s first home game in 18 days, since a 3-2 overtime win against Colorado on March 10. Utah hosts Colorado for the first of three games, with the two teams meeting again Friday and Saturday at 7 p.m. Utah took five of six points and two-straight wins against Colorado March 7, 9 and 10. Utah is 3-0-1-0 against Colorado this year at home, with three of the four games going past regulation.

After six-straight games on the road Meisner makes his Utah debut tonight. Utah goaltenders are 4-2 in their home debuts this year, with Andrew Engelage, Shane Owen, Grant Rollheiser and Adam Morrison all winning their first starts.

Utah is 13-2-1-4 when leading goal scorer Colin Vock scores a goal. He leads the team with 28 goals and has scored a goal in a team season-high four-straight games.

Game Day Blog Entry: March 24

03/24/2013 10:28 AM - Adrian Denny

After a frustrating 0-3-0-1 record versus Las  Vegas at home this year, Utah looks to go 3-1 at Orleans Arena this year, where they have outscored the Wranglers 7-1 over the last two games here.

Adam Estoclet (four goals, 11 assists) and Colin Vock (seven goals, six assists), each now have seven-game scoring streaks.

During the course of Utah’s season-long eight-game unbeaten streak, the Grizzlies have trailed 11 separate times, 10 by one goal and once by two goals. They have battled back to at least tie each time they have fallen behind and have trailed in every game of the unbeaten stretch.

Goaltender Ben Meisner, who has burst onto the scene for Utah on this road trip leads Utah goalies this year with a 2.29 goals-against-average and a .926 save percentage.

Utah’s eight-game unbeaten streak, their third longest since joining the ECHL has also tied their third longest road unbeaten streak since 2005 at 2-0-0-4. Utah had a seven-game unbeaten streak on the road in 2005-2006. They went unbeaten in ten-straight road games January 27-March 2 of 2009.

Game Day Blog Entry: March 23

03/23/2013 10:25 AM - Adrian Denny

The Grizzlies will add two more college standouts to the roster for this weekend’s action.

Brent Gwidt, who was the captain at the University of Nebraska-Omaha, will make his professional debut tonight after joining Utah last night. He is 6’2”, 222 pounds and was selected by Washington in the sixth round of the 2006 NHL Entry Draft.

In addition, the team has added a puck moving defenseman in Darren Rowe from the University of Massachusetts-Amherst. He had six goals and 10 assists for 16 points in 33 games during his just completed senior season, which included season-highs in every statistical category.

In addition, the Grizzlies have two very important bodies on the trip who essentially haven’t played games in over two months. We will see if the two return to the lineup tonight or tomorrow. Stay tuned.

Utah’s seven-game unbeaten streak at 3-0-1-3 is tied for their third longest unbeaten streak since they joined the ECHL. They won seven-straight games last year from October 15-November 4. They won nine-straight games from October 29-November 24 in 2005 and went unbeaten in ten-straight games from January 9-February 4 of 2009 at 2-0-3-5.

Game Day Blog Entry: March 17

03/17/2013 11:51 AM - Adrian Denny

The Grizzlies have turned into a resilient group. They have come back to tie the game in four-straight third periods, including last night when they tied the game at 3,4 and 5 in the third period. Over the last seven days, Utah has rallied back from nine one-goal deficits to tie. The key being that they haven’t fallen behind my more than one goal in the stretch. Utah has had only two one-goal leads in the last week.

Utah has also had success on special teams as of late, going 6-0-2-2 in their last 10 games when scoring a power-play goal as they did last night. Utah also moved to 6-1-0-1 when not allowing a power-play goal as they did last night.

Today wraps up six-straight weeks for Utah in which they have played four games in five nights five times and four games in six nights once. The Grizzlies will get five days off before their next game Saturday in Las Vegas.

The Grizzlies (2-0-1-3) can set a new season-high with a seven-game unbeaten streak today, which would be their longest since they won seven-straight games October 15-November 4 of last season.

Game Day Blog Entry: March 16

03/16/2013 3:43 PM - Adrian Denny

Ben Meisner’s first two games with the Grizzlies have been impressive as he has turned in Utah’s fifth best back-to-back starts this season by stopping 67 of the 71 shots that he has seen for a .943 save percentage and the fourth best back-to-to back starts based on goals-against-average with a 1.85.

Meisner’s first two starts with Utah are very comparable to some of Utah’s best goaltenders the last five years in J.P. Lamoureux, Mikko Koskinen and Nathan Lawson. Lawson stopped 63 of 65 (.969 save percentage) for Utah in 2007 going 2-0 after being claimed off of waivers from Phoenix. Mikko Koskinen started 2-0 by stopping 73 of 77 shots (.948 save percentage).  Lamoureux stopped 70 of 75 shots (.933 save percentage).

Utah brings seven former San Francisco players back to the Cow Palace tonight who played a combined total of 71 games here this season. The building is over 70 years old and a lot of visiting teams don’t make the adjustment well to the dim lighting, small ice surface, the stairs that lead from the visiting locker room to the ice and more; which seems to be an excuse to not play well here. The Grizzlies went 1-0-0-1 in San Francisco in November.

The Bulls have been off since a 7-2 win in Stockton Wednesday. Utah arrived in San Francisco at 4 a.m. after a ride from Bakersfield, which is the equivalent of Salt Lake to Boise.

03/15/2013 10:21 AM - Adrian Denny

Ben Meisner, who stopped 34 of 35 shots Wednesday in his professional debut; made the first save, controlled rebounds and was also good with the glove. He saw nearly 40 shots a game in college and left American International College ranked 12th all time in the NCAA with 3,684 saves. Meisner’s college career came to an end last Saturday and he was on a flight to Bakersfield Tuesday to join Utah.

Adam Estoclet (one goal, five assists) and Colin Vock (three goals, three assists) each have six points in the last two games.

Utah is 6-0-2-0 in their last eight games when scoring a power-play goal.

The Grizzlies had healthy scratches Wednesday for the first time since November 2 that they have had extra healthy bodies not in the lineup.

Game Day Blog Entry: March 13

03/13/2013 9:16 AM - Adrian Denny

A win today or any kind of overtime or shootout loss will officially clinch the Grizzlies their sixth-straight playoff appearance.

With goaltender and Bruins prospect Adam Morrison getting called up yesterday, the Grizzlies expect to be adding a goaltender who just finished his college career where he saw a lot of minutes and a lot of shots on the east coast. His save percentage increased every year and he finished this season with a .923 save percentage with his finale just last Saturday. He also beat a team ranked in the top three in the country. The amateur tryout agreement will appear in today’s transactions.

In addition to Nick Tuzzolino, Utah will also add another AHL player back to the lineup today. That roster add will be appearing in both the AHL and ECHL transactions shortly.

Utah looks for a four-game unbeaten streak for the first time since December 15-31 when they went 3-0-1-2. The Grizzlies are unbeaten in six of their last eight games in regulation at 4-2-1-1.

A win gives Utah five of eight standings points for the second-straight week after going 2-1-0-1 last week as they currently stand at 1-1-1-0 this week. Utah hits the road for four games in five nights Wednesday and Friday for their only trip of the year to Bakersfield and Saturday, Sunday with San Francisco. Utah’s final three games of the regular season at home are March 27,29 and 30 when they welcome back Colorado for a Wednesday, Friday, Saturday set.

This is the third-straight game that Utah has dressed a full lineup of 16 skaters. This is only the third time since December 15 that Utah has dressed 16 skaters in three-straight games. This is just the fifth time all season that Utah will play with 16 skaters in three-straight games

Berkley Scott has a season-high three-game scoring streak with one goal and two assists.  Gaelan Patterson has three goals and five assists in his last seven games. Tommy Maxwell has his first two-game scoring streak of the year with two goals and one assist. Maxwell has four of his ten points this year against Colorado, whom he played for last year. Evan Stoflet has three assists in his last four games.

Utah has led after one period in two-straight for the first time since December 19-21 and the third time this year. Utah hasn’t led after one period in three-straight games all season.

Cody Carlson has one goal and one assist, Jordan Clendenning has a goal, Sebastien Trudeau has one goal and one assist and Jonathan Lessard has an assist. The new skaters have combined for six points with Utah, compared to Kory Falite (one goal), Mark Isherwood and Ian Schultz, who have one point in three games with San Francisco since being traded as the Bulls have gone 0-3.

Utah has outshot the Eagles 33-13 and outscored them 3-0 in the first period at home this year. Utah and Colorado have gone past regulation in both games at Maverik Center this year and in three of eight contests overall. In two years at Maverik Center, the two teams have gone past regulation in five of ten games.

Last night, David Eddy had one goal and two assists to lead Utah, Gaelan Patterson had two assists. Colorado drew 6 of the 8 power-plays and had a five minute major situation, along with a 1:10 five-on-three situation. At one point Colorado had 6:43 straight on the power-play and 8:43 of a 9:33 stretch on the power-play in the second period, but Utah killed all three penalties and added a shorthanded goal to take a 2-0 lead.

Adam Morrison will make his 12th-straight start for Utah. Morrison has made 40 or more saves in two of his last three stars. He stopped a Utah season-high of 45 Saturday in Idaho and 40 of 44 last night. Morrison has allowed three or less in regulation four of last six

Last night was just the second time all year in eight games that Colorado has had more power-plays than Utah head-to-head. Utah is 4-1 in their last five games when not allowing a power-play goal.

Berkley Scott has scored a goal in two-straight games  Gaelan Patterson has three goals and three assists in his last six games.

Game Day Blog Entry: March 8

03/08/2013 10:19 AM - Adrian Denny

Utah played Wednesday night with a full lineup of 16 skaters for the first time since February 10 and the first time in 13 games. Utah has had 16 skaters just four times in the last 27 games due to injuries. Utah has played with a full lineup this year just 21 times in 60 games and 11 times in the last 49 games.

Prior to yesterday’s ECHL trade deadline, the Grizzlies acquired rookie forward Tayor Carnevale from the San Francisco Bulls, who will make his pro debut tonight. Carnevale, 21, had nine goals and 26 assists for 35 points in 37 games last year during his final year of major junior hockey split between Sarnia and Shawinigan. He had 35 goals and 35 assists for 70 points in 2010-2011 with Barrie and Windsor of the OHL.

Utah’s magic number to clinch their sixth consecutive playoff spot is 8 standings points.  They could clinch a playoff berth as early as tomorrow with two wins against Colorado and two Bakersfield losses in regulation to Ontario tonight and tomorrow.

Utah looks to rekindle their home ice success against the Eagles after going 1-5 in Colorado this season after a 4-3 shootout win against Colorado in the only Maverik Center meeting on October 26. It has been a series controlled by the home teams since Colorado joined the ECHL last year. Utah is 4-2-0-2 all-time versus the Eagles at Maverik Center and 3-8-0-1 all-time in Loveland, Colorado. This is the first of six-straight home games for Utah against Colorado. Utah started a stretch of nine of their final 20 games of the year two weeks ago against the Eagles.

Game Day Blog Entry: March 6

03/06/2013 10:39 AM - Adrian Denny

All four players acquired yesterday from San Francisco arrived in Utah last evening and will make their debuts tonight.

The Grizzlies will dress a full team of 16 skaters tonight for the first time in over a month after four-straight months of battling injuries.

Utah looks for a repeat of last year when they went 8-3-0-1 after March 6 and finished the season as the hottest team in the Western Conference. Utah entered action on March 6 with an almost identical record of 25-30-0-5. The start came following two trade deadline deals completed by Head Coach Kevin Colley. Utah went 5-0-0-1 in their last six home games after March 6 last year.

Tonight marks the first time since January 6 and 7 of 2009 that Utah has hosted/played and Eastern Conference opponent. They split two games with Reading. Utah is 3-2 all-time against non conference opponents after taking 2 of 3 games from the Texas Wildcatters February 28, March 2 and 3 of 2007. Gwinnett Head Coach John Wroblewski played against Utah with Fresno from 2005-2007.

Adam Morrison will make his tenth-straight start for Utah. Morrison made a Utah season-high 45 saves on 48 shots Saturday. 49 shots allowed was the most allowed by Utah this season. Morrison has allowed three or less in regulation three of the last four. Morrison did not face Gwinnett as a member of the South Carolina Stingrays earlier this season.

In Utah’s last four wins, they have outscored the opposition 6-2 on special teams.

Game Day Blog Entry: March 2

03/02/2013 10:36 AM - Adrian Denny

The Grizzlies wrap up a stretch of 21 games in 36 days, 11 games in 18 nights and seven games in nine nights this evening in Boise.

A win tonight gives Utah a 3-1 week, which with the lightness of the schedule in the first 3 months of the year, would be Utah’s first three win week this year.

It is the seventh-straight three or four game series that with a win, they have a chance to take two of three or at least split.

It is the 13th and final meeting of the year between Utah and Idaho. A win/overtime, shootout loss; gives Utah their second-straight series win against the Steelheads after going 8-4-0-1 last year.

Utah is starting to get close to officially clinching their sixth-straight playoff appearance. Their magic number is 13 standings points. Anytime Bakersfield loses or Utah wins, two points shave off of that.  The very earliest Utah could clinch would be next Saturday.

Game Day Blog Entry: March 1

03/01/2013 10:22 AM - Adrian Denny

The Grizzlies have done a lot of things right this week during their two-straight one-goal wins. They are 2-8 on the power-play and they have stayed out of the penalty box and are perfect on only 5 shorthanded situations.

Utah has also earned these four points in the standings by battling back from 1-0 deficits and one-goal third period deficits each game as well.

Gaelan Patterson has continued to lead Utah as of late with three goals in the last two games and four goals in the last five games.

James Martin also has a three-game scoring streak with two goals and one assist, tying his longest scoring streak of the year.
Utah looks for their third-straight win for the first time since they were 3-0.
